Fluctuations leads us along an old-school path, albeit it’s not totally experimental pop oriented; at the same time, it forges new sonic avenues that only Language Field can unravel.
Wonderfully haphazard electronics and acrobatic synth work
Paul Cheshire recently released the four tracks that make up Fluctuations for Astra Solaria. The unique compositions are a jumbled mix of wonderfully haphazard electronics and acrobatic synth work, with “Mouth Noises” providing the initial blips and brittle bleeps before modular motions are bent and twisted with staccato percussion. While “Plume” is a deftly crafted drumming bombardment of vintage electronica and pummeling rhythms, “Shadow Boxer” rummages through flickering glitch and breaks as it continues to expand, with accompanying synth lines holding everything together.
The very brief closing “Hubbub” has a feel that would have fit in well with Worm Interface’s early releases; astute melodies and slow notes flow together as though Plod—or possibly Plone—were controlling the machines. Fluctuations leads us along an old-school path, albeit it’s not totally experimental pop oriented; at the same time, it forges new sonic avenues that only Language Field can unravel.
