Fans of early-era Merck and the current chills of Aleph Zero will take solace in these relaxed audio movements.
It seems like just the other day that IG88 presented us with his self-released Blackberry Light, a mild extended player that hinted at early-era Portishead maneuvers. For art and sound label Nueva Forma, IG88 has elongated his signature gravitational abstracts in the shape of A Loom & Not Me. In keeping with the artists guest appearances (including Jenni Potts and Bed Of Stars)—these cuts predominately affected by swaying vocal cries—IG88 maintains composure throughout these lighthearted rhythms. Riding on gentle waves of downtempo (“Memoir Ease,” “Gateway Hug” and “Ominous Headrush” for example), crisp percussion—slightly glitched to reveal hidden treasure buried within—opens new plateaus of pensive data flows. Lyrics aside, fans of early-era Merck and the current chills of Aleph Zero will take solace in these relaxed audio movements. Seguaying from atmospheric pulses to digitized streams (ie. “Coughing on Syrup Shores”), A Loom & Not Me is a tempered abstract of subdued guitar flicks, treated clip-hop and polished notes that will fit comfortably in the background of late night coffee bars for years to come.
