The aptly titled release is particularly self-evident in that it is a prime example of an established musician allowing himself to express emotion effortlessly via sonic colors in very perceptive and creative hues.
Emotive ambient electronic music at its core
The Berlin School-style of sequencing is in full effect on Axiom, a half dozen collection of music by a master of the genre—a gentle glide through ethereal sonic landscapes meant for escape and refuge, Axiom elevates itself with emotive ambient electronic music at its core.
“Omicron” opens with synthesizer bleeps and surplus 80s sounding soundtrack—also described as “one of the highlights of the entire Portals compilation” (Behind The Sky Music, 2020)—as “Nitro” inhabits an alternate universe, targeted lasers and spatial atmospherics in all the right places. This is truly where Ian Boddy finds his groove—tracks like “Boddy Love” drift through surreal ambient strands and pitter-patter rhythms that are more about contemplation and reflection than they are about blending strange and subtle acidic sound sculptures. “Icon” simmers with its ebb and flow, oscillating between melodic bubbles and curiosity as “The Fallen” segues through a pensive ambient saturation of neo-classical sine waves. The title track is a triumphant downtempo epic that packs a poignant instrumental journey that one simply cannot let go of—a crowning achievement of the lot, and one that merits repeated listens.
