A platform to explore themes of presence, absence, removal and acceptance
At the intersection of ambient, drone and environmental sound you’ll find Halftribe. His return to Dronarivm, Disappear in Silent Ways, comes in colors at once luminous and blurred, with a captivating ambi[val]ence, evoking a sense of moments presenting with past inside. Evanescence.
This is achieved partly via a keen melodic sensibility with soft analog-y synths, field captures and odd voice fragments crafted into tone poems at once expansive and intimate. A form of minimalism runs through DiSW, manifest not in ideological stance but simple compositional practice; Ryan Bissett eschews the impulse for new entries to the sound stage for letting sounds evolve, adding color to broader canvas before letting in other elements. Sounds recede then return, revenant—a vague sense of movement over overt development; a soft ebb-flow dynamic, harmonic shifts emerging to color tenor, drones privileging depth over density, minute tonal shifts reframing space around and within. “Listen,” bids us attend to our environs, with its leitmotif ‘what we listen to is constantly feeding us’ adjuring mindfulness of what we let in. Field recordings bring in the natural world, as on “Dusk,” mixing layered drones with rainfall, evoking crepuscular horizons in day-night transition, inner-outer boundaries dissolved; or “Sanctuary,” pointing to a site of refuge found after disappearing; its oneiric mood feeds into “Yearn,” water flow enhancing a sense of peace through nature connection. “Windfall” shifts focus from water, distant whispers suggesting a field with grass and trees windblown, light filtering through branches to slow cloud drift. The title track brings an interlude of release, with birdsong and babbling before “Everything Comes to an End” leaves us with… that sense of evanescence.
Following For the Summer, or Forever (2018) and Elegant, Golden (2022), Dronarivm has provided Halftribe with a platform to explore themes of presence, absence, removal and acceptance. The artist’s stamp, though, is more outline than full imprint, DiSW not looking to thematic statement so much as documenting the resonance of a feeling, in all its contours.
