Together by Gigi D’Amico is indeed a unique and offbeat album. Like many works that are off-center, it likely will provide a lot of appeal, but mainly to certain listeners—to those who particularly vibe with its eccentricities.
A unique and offbeat album
Listening to Together by Gigi D’Amico is an engaging, if not at times disorienting, experience. The album as a whole offers a sonic experience I would call existential. In “Nature Of Capitolism,” a very loud, cycling drone is heard front and center. While drones often reassure, this one throws a person off-balance. It is too artificial, too unstable to be deemed organic. It is a drone more reminiscent of a nuclear accident. Contrasting the drone are a series of Utopic pad melodies. If perfection is referenced, it is both shallow, temporary and unstable. Dreams of a better world clash with the volatile, unnerving nature of contemporary life.
In “Warm Tomorrow,” comforting, organic pads, among the most listenable sounds on the album, contrast with glitch sequences that are sharp and percussive. Imagine a robot surgeon humming like a nurse while enacting a series of sudden perforations into human skin. The effect is again very contemporary. In today’s world, daydreams are all too often truncated by artificial or mechanical phenomena– alarms, car crashes, telephone calls.
“Pink Tears In A Joyful Sunshine” reclaims a sense of intimacy, but does so in a manner reminiscent of Severed Heads. The electronics feel human, and perhaps masculine, but are at the same time quite abstract. What remains of physicality has become electronic. The experience is conveyed mainly on a conceptual level.
Together by Gigi D’Amico is indeed a unique and offbeat album. Like many works that are off-center, it likely will provide a lot of appeal, but mainly to certain listeners—to those who particularly vibe with its eccentricities.
