A maze of drifting, if not dizzying, electronic morsels remixed and refined with deep field modular and acid acrobatics that simultaneously resuscitates the IDM name tag from yesteryear.
Resuscitating the IDM nametag from yesteryear.
The nostalgic (early) days of IDM around the mid/late 90s felt so fresh, abstract, and creative as the Kracfive CDr imprint lead the way with a roster of like-minded global talent sometimes referred to as bedroom musicians. Also, the Remixes is a collection of remixes for friends (including Marumari, ilkae, Coppé, Proswell, aghost and others) spread through labels like Kracfive, Carpark, and Merck. Noah Sasso (aka Octopus Inc / getdizzzy) noted in a recent email exchange that “this massive collection includes many new remixes, and many remixes that were once thought to be lost or stranded on obscure, small-press tape and vinyl labels—remastered and reworked.”
Not all is lost though; core IDM grooves and peculiar sounding attributes are intact on this remix assortment as the Chicago-based Kracfive co-founder gets busy as getdizzzy and unearths a plethora of revised found sounds, lounge-dub, downtempo-tinged new-age, and chilled sound-escapes that are all quite calming as a whole. Many roughened melodies are stretched and torn into microscopic rhythms, seemingly formed by vintage analog machines as Sasso finds comfort in tangled bits and bobs drenched in subtle clip-hop moments along the way.
Also, the Remixes is a maze of drifting, if not dizzying, electronic morsels remixed and refined with deep field modular and acid acrobatics that simultaneously resuscitates the IDM name tag from yesteryear. Favorites include “Horidula remix,” “Colorphone remix,” “Waking Up In The Morning remix,” “Summer Slalome remix,” “andormachinedub remix,” “Saka remix,” “Hexspeak remix,” and the closing sparkling ambient soundtrack of “Valse remix.”
