Fortresses :: Here EP (ROHS!)

Together, the two tracks form a small refuge built from sound: sparse voices, lingering tones, and an unhurried sense of calm. Fortresses finds its strength in restraint, creating music that asks little of the listener beyond simply staying awhile, drifting, and letting go.

Fortresses is the ambient project of British-born multidisciplinary artist Sam Ashton, based between London and Portland, Oregon. Formed in 2020, the project’s Here was composed and recorded during Ashton’s first year in Oregon, capturing something of that period’s distance, stillness, and open space.

Across two slow-moving pieces, Here settles into a world of stretched drones, softened guitar, and hazy layers that seem to drift rather than arrive. The title track unfolds across wide sonic plateaus, with ambient shoegaze textures gathering around the listener like a quiet, weightless haze. Nothing feels hurried; sounds linger, dissolve, and leave room for thought.

“Am” moves even more gently, passing through suspended instrumental passages where guitar strings blur into gliding melodic threads. Time seems to loosen around both pieces, each carrying a subdued melancholy that feels less sorrowful than reflective. There is a dreamlike quality to the music, as though these sounds have been lifted from some distant memory and left to slowly fade at the edges.
