Equimanthorn is one pionnering project in the subterranean world of tribal / ritualistic dark ambient music, driven by occult strengths and by an interest for ancient esoteric believes. It features members from Absu, Zemial, Melechesh and The Soil Bleeds Black. Equimanthorn has been active since the early 90s. This album is welcomed by the Toronto-based label Shaytan Productions (whose production is devoted to worldwide dark music, from drone ambient to extreme metal, with a personal inclination for the East in terms of sound signature and bands origin).
Exalted Are The Seven Throne Bearers of Ninnkigal develops sinuous and soothing sound ambiences, relatively mysterious, darkly enthralling and sustained by an obvious Middle East-like flavor. The ethno-ritual component catches the listener attention at the beginning of the album. Despite the exploration of a mystical path the general sound atmosphere is not that cryptical but rather accessible and pleasant. The band distingues its style also by the use of long improvised and free-form sequences which sometimes admit ragadelic grooves as in the first three tracks. More martial electro beats accompanied by narratives can also be appreciated with more minimal soundtracky thrills in “Irkalla (To Enter The Great Above)” and “The Submissive Myth Genesis Of Mirror Waters Rising.”
This release is a diversified and multidirectional dark space ambient album with a singular use of ritualistic-Eastern figures and symbols. Easily recommended for fans of the droney ritualistic Voice of Eye, Muslimgauze, Herbst9 and also for those who enjoy scores for supernatural horror flicks (John Carpenter, Jay Chattaway…) and martial ambient industrialism (Kraschau et al.)
Exalted Are The Seven Throne Bearers of Ninnkigal is available on Shaytan.
