Raw mechanized noise flowing through digitized and crumbled spaces are ever apparent on Tree Branches, Eden Grey’s recent outing with Female Electronic Musician.
[Info Page] It’s the sense of bewilderment that solidifies Tree Branches‘ calmness and further emphasizes the fact that this album was created while Eden Grey lived in solitude out in the country in 2010. Having been surrounded by many large old trees, Eden drew from this environment an album that is firmly rooted in quaint exp-electronics yet branches out, quite literally, into a dense array of mysterious and often playful channels. Lightly touching an emotive thread, Eden Grey sincerely displays her point of view.
Sheared melodies cascade to and from faint rhythms creating a reclusive tranquility surrounding each movement. Bass lines diverge against subtle tribal elements and an analogous, almost vintage sound emerges from the soil. With further inspection, a stripped outer shell reveals delicate sheets of fractured percussion; all tempered with a zeal on par with Tympanik Audio’s esoteric sound base. And it’s with this distinction that Tree Branches, and the rather short lived 37-minutes of electrical flutter, exposes itself subtly in a forest we have yet to visit. Wandering into and out of loosened field recordings, brittle leaves fall pleasantly from the sky with a certain peace of mind, wind breaths life into analog machines, and brushed pulses toggle in a retrograde motion. The roughened (and often fragile) bark of each piece herein is perhaps the defining ingredient that will either sink into the subconscious or simply run astray if not properly absorbed. And with all of the above-mentioned sonic details, it is the visual aspect of Tree Branches that spreads its twigs of introspective audio and leaves us with a neutral exit that is calm and reserved.
