Here Luca’s sax plays over rhythms and textures generated by Luciano’s modular system—an avid modular aficionado might even recognise a sound source or two.
A record that oozes with cool confidence and boldness
Divus II is the second and latest instalment in a series of collaborations between electronic musician and techno producer Luciano Lamanna and saxophone player Luca T. Mai, of world-renowned band ZU (and if you don’t know about ZU, please check them out—brilliant stuff).
Here Luca’s sax plays over rhythms and textures generated by Luciano’s modular system—an avid modular aficionado might even recognise a sound source or two (I’m pretty sure Make Noise’s Mysteron is used throughout the record for example).
The verb “playing” should very much be understood in all its meanings here. While the synth sounds are not typical, they mainly provide a platform for the saxophone to play over with immediacy and above all a constant sense of fun. It is abundantly clear that on this concise record (twenty-seven minutes spread between seven tracks), both musicians are having a lot of fun together. The melodic salvos of “C2,” to the gritty, industrial grooves of “C3,” or the heavy, somber interplay between kick and sax on “D2” are all born from this infectious, stripped-down conversation between two experimentalists who know how to commit to an idea and let it grow.
A record that oozes with cool confidence and boldness.
