Broken beats, bass and wicked distortion, Cutting Room cut through rugged terrain on The Night Chemist—the Australian trio formed by Connor Gibson, Eugene Brockmuller and Cosmo Feltham inhabit otherworldly electronics start to end. A slowly brooding concoction that obliterates low-end and found sounds, there are five mind bendingly creative tracks to digest and a remix by none other than Esplendor Geométrico of “Always Rock,” a smorgasbord of primordial post-industrial sludge. Elsewhere, Cutting Room slice and dice harder edged electro/techno slabs as revealed on “Soul Path Assailant” that tears through synthesizer machine funk and sporadic funk noise. The title track is perhaps the minimalist of the lot and yet it expands the proverbial abstract electronic envelope even further with raw analog breaks as “Hum” slides into mechanical mayhem. “Always Rock Dog Ya Mates” takes center stage with its shattered electro fragments and acid-drenched cybernetic warfare—broken blips and bleeps converge in a splendid sonic mess.
