Charm Days :: A Firefly Out Of Season (Sun Sea Sky)

A Firefly Out Of Season exudes summertime road trip appeal—windows all the way down, let the sunshine in during these strange times.

Downbeat acrobatics and nuanced melodic bursts

Downtempo grooves and expertly crafted glitch funk/jazz motifs from Charm Days (aka film and television composer Doug Kaufman) are found on the latest album A Firefly Out Of Season with Sun Sea Sky. It’s all laid out on these nine tracks that bring back memories of classic edIT, Four Tet, Telefon Tel Aviv, and Teebs.

Have a listen to the fruitful clip-hop beats and swaying lyrical blasts on “Warm Your Bones,” the loungey electronic rhythm on this track is utter bliss as the title track crisps its way into the subconscious with garage-style glitch and nuanced melodic bursts scattered throughout. Charm Days displays positivity on this album—upbeat harmonies balanced against floating ambient flutter and broken beats drifting all about. The sun-soaked “End 421” or “Second Naivete” are prime examples. And just when you thought the electronic glitter would be too bright and polished, Charm Days reveals perhaps the highlight of the album, “The Universe Crackles” to balance things off. Minuscule lyrical bits float about crunchy percussion and atmospheric layers, its contemplative vibration all-consuming. Similar downbeat acrobatics can be found on the aptly-titled “Everything Will Never Be The Same,” where the groove just doesn’t let up.
