Post-industrial slivers interplay with predominately ambient motifs and chilled low-pressure rhythms as Data Rebel creates serene IDM snapshots that are at once fleeting as they are time stretched.

If you missed out on Data Rebel‘s catalog spanning from 2012-2018, now’s the time to seek out Retrospective, a 20-piece compilation that shines a light on previous releases and exemplifies the UK-based artists sonic signature. Released in November 2018, the overall feeling is drifting, contemplative, and a filled with downbeat segues through life and all of its subtle intricacies. Just have a listen to the gorgeous notes emanating from “The Unknown” and the downtempo horizons on “Walk Away” and if you’re not taking aback, we’re not sure what will.

Post-industrial slivers interplay with predominately ambient motifs and chilled low-pressure rhythms as Data Rebel creates serene IDM snapshots that are at once fleeting as they are time stretched. The toned synthesizer layers create an ebb and flow which ultimately fits Sun Sea Sky’s roster and audio-visual foundations. Over the years Data Rebel’s sound has shifted slightly—as it should based on life events—so one can also enjoy the brittle bits and pieces of upbeat passages like “Galaktika” and “Following Seven,” to the more glitch-based sound-waves as evidenced on “Invisible World” and “Angular.”

Overall Retrospective provides a tranquil assemblage of finely crafted electronic music from an artist whose emotions are clearly on both sleeves. Touching the soul with its uplifting charm, this timeless collection will only get better with age, and I look forward to diving in as the years pass on.

Retrospective is available on Sun Sea Sky.
