Chop, chop, chop it up! The official soundtrack for Word Is Bond (a debut film of writer and director, Alex Mastoon—Caural’s wife) by decade plus vet and the film’s co-producer Caural, approaches the subject matter with a mixtape mindset. Described as a music-driven short about the intersection of the LGBT & hip-hop communities, in relation, the soundtrack itself is a compact and dynamically produced accompaniment featuring elements of jazz fusion, as exemplified on the track “We & You,” and purposeful groove as heard on “Heliopause.”
In a similar realm to the sampling styles of J Dilla, DJ Shadow, Dexter and Blockhead, the six track EP offers plenty of beat and nostalgic turntablism vibe. The track “Sorceress” provides an atmospheric end to the well-mixed release. Overall a welcomed and authentic addition to boom bap/instrumental electronic hip-hop world, the soundtrack would be fit for freestyling and brings to mind the genre’s 2012 resurgence when Joey Bada$$ dropped 1999.
With its world premiere at Outfest Fusion (spotlighting the diversity of the LGBTQ community) in early March with subsequent film festival dates at the Pasadena Film Festival and the Women’s International Film Festival, the short looks great. Get ahead of it with the grab-worthy digital soundtrack from Caural, not just a suitable soundtrack for the film but for your day as well.
Word Is Bond (Original Soundtrack) is available for pre-order March 12, 2019 on Prism92. Visit Caural on Bandcamp, Instagram, or Facebook.
