The melodic swells, hypnotizing beatwork, and pulsing rhythms that ooze with downtempo and glitchy production—it’s hard to describe, but always present when Carbinax is at the helm.
An electrical jolt of positive sonic energy
Carbinax can be trusted to provide electrical jolts of positive sonic energy. There’s a symbiosis of electronic music and its emotional draw, something akin to what Brothomstates, Plaid and Boards of Canada manage to do so well. The melodic swells, hypnotizing beatwork, and pulsing rhythms that ooze with downtempo and glitchy production—it’s hard to describe, but always present when Carbinax is at the helm.
Immuniverse—originally a CD release on L50, now sold out from May 2021—Expanded is the deluxe version for fans who might have missed the physical / limited CD edition. Some of the tracks have been reworked and seven new additional pieces have been included. Initially intended to be released months ago, Carbinax worked through technical issues after a hard drive failure and had to rebuild his system. Immuniverse—a word invented to describe a safe place in the midst of Covid, is not a “Covid” album, instead, it represents the artists’ ability to exponentially unfold brittle electronic music.
Highlights take shape with the sparkling samples featured on “Everything And Nothing,” a contemplative piece that sparks at all the right angles. On the BoC-laden tip, “Prizm Guard” is utterly beautiful, hands down, and one of the finest tracks of 2021—its syncopated drums and dilapidated synths bend and twist with glittery nostalgia. A Plaid-esque groove can be found on “Transition” a funky and movement-based track straddling the lines of bleep techno with confidence. “Conquered (Chain Mix)” features Carbinax at max capacity—upbeat to its core, ascending, rising, and harmonizing start to finish. Perhaps one of the more abstract pieces takes shapes on “In the land of the blind” where familiar Plaid-like tones are soaked up via evolving beat patterns and vocal strands reminiscent of Crisopa and even port-royal.
All references aside, and yes you will find them spread throughout Immuniverse Expanded, it’s nothing short of excelled electronic music to thrust the listener into the next decade—a soon to be classic, hands down.
