These fleeting and crumpled samples may be brief, but they deliver just enough energy to capture delicate microsound textures and granular, melodic tones.
A brief yet compelling sonic mosaic
Phil Dodds and Jonas Geiger Ohlin skillfully manipulated tapes using the Library of Congress C-1 variable speed cassette player, crafting a series of six sussinct tracks. Two of them stretch just beyond the two-minute mark, while the others stay under a minute, forming a brief yet compelling sonic mosaic. The result is a swirling, byte-sized collection that ranges from brittle, hypnotic technoid bubbles (“Sample 32” and “Sample 04”) to decayed downtempo fragments and lounge-infused glitch-pop mechanisms (“Sample 01” and “Sample 17”), and abstract, fragmented beats (“Sample 28” and “Sample 34”). These fleeting and crumpled samples may be brief, but they deliver just enough energy to capture delicate microsound textures and granular, melodic tones, offering a glimpse into the intricacies of minuscule experimental sound structures.
