Retro-futuristic, shamanic, nocturnal. Alpha Heaven is an evocative multidimensional piece of music best consumed as a whole.
Take it as you want, seems to be AUN’s motto. The mysterious duo from Montreal doesn’t care much for concepts and themes. Dumais and Leblanc allow the listener to interpret their music anyway he/she wants. That’s why their albums are highly escapist-friendly. The music is a blank canvas, the listener’s mind is the painter. When I float in the rich spacey fabrics of Alpha Heaven, I receive esoteric transmissions from another planet, I cross over to parallel universes, visit Blade Runner cityscapes, go back in time and jump into the future as well.
Elements of ambient, shoegaze, space music and post-rock exist together engagingly. The textures are luminous and electrifying, infused just a little bit with a kind of grit that gives a warm vintage charm.
The music flows effortlessly and generates uplifting, pulsating and multilayered moments that occasionally morph into sedative, caressing and airy. A celestial vibe always remains, and at times, subtle dark shadows lurk. Retro-futuristic, shamanic, nocturnal. Alpha Heaven is an evocative multidimensional piece of music best consumed as a whole. It was released in the summer but is far more suitable for the seductive shades of winter. There’s a small chance that AUN came from another planet, but Alpha Heaven is a record worth staying on this earth for.
Alpha Heaven is available on Denovali.
