Ariadne’s Labyrinth :: Lost And Founded EP (Detroit Underground)

Lost And Founded is a mixed assortment, one that balances rapidly rotating pulsars with classical drum’n bass techno.

Somewhere in a dense field of high-grade electronics is where you’ll find Detroit Underground’s latest signing—Ariadne’s Labyrinth (aka Sharon Subbarao), a classically trained violinist and pianist—and a debut EP for the imprint.

Energetic, emotive, and orchestral at times, tracks like “Afrohorse” wander into bass-beat infested raw techno with a Plaid-esque sheen. Elsewhere you’ll find frenetic percussion and rapid-fire melodies on “Enigm 2” zipping by at lightening speed. The classical mirror-image version (“Enigm 1”) delivers the artists musical tapestry in all its colorful hues, drum’n violins at full throttle. On a somewhat tranquilized slant, “Music Machine” is a dynamic, rhythm burst and melodic flicker—it boasts an eventual adrenaline-packed closure. The minimal drill’n bass effects of “UFO Tofu” is replete with breaks and bleak melodic synths that even Squarepusher might dabble with. The extended player closes with a collaboration between Ariadne’s Labyrinth, Valance Drakes, and Ivan Shopov on “Overcoming Negative Emotions.” Slightly out of place, its dusty clips, slow-motion pace, classical sound-design, and audio smudging is, on its own, an inspired slice of life.
