Qebo :: APRDKT (Detroit Underground)

Qebo brings us a somewhat unexpected remix compilation this time around. If you aren’t familiar with Qebo, their usual style is very much in the vein of mid-career Autechre (think Tri Repetae, Chiastic Slide)—often taking these influences in new directions and providing their own specific melodic vibe to further differentiate themselves from the Manchester duo.

A somewhat unexpected remix compilation

Qebo (aka the longtime multi-talented, Athens, Greece-based sound designer and composer Alex Retsis) brings us a somewhat unexpected remix compilation this time around.

If you aren’t familiar with Qebo, his usual style is very much in the vein of mid-career Autechre (think Tri Repetae, Chiastic Slide)—often taking these influences in new directions and providing his own specific melodic vibe to further differentiate themselves from the Manchester duo. If you have heard the recent Analogical Force Remixes album this is an experiment in the same realm, with different friends and associates remixing the same track, instead of a variety of tracks, into different versions.

These remixes cover a variety of styles, most of them still in the glitchy/skittering DSP exercises as Autechre, but others reaching across genres for electro, techno and breakbeat influences while still, somewhat impressively, managing to maintain a pretty consistent vibe and mood throughout. I personally enjoyed most of the remixes and feel that they each add something or take the original work in a new direction—and after you’ve finished that, there’s a bonus of more original Qebo tracks to fill this out into a more than full album.
