Anthony "Shake" Shakir :: Mr Shakir's Beat Store (Klang Elektronik)

With his latest 12″, Shake pulls out eight tracks of unmistakable quality, sounding confident as he plugs along in his own little groove. As fits the title, all tracks are relatively short and simple rhythmic numbers, which could by and large be passed off as hip-hop instrumentals. That said, all have their own structure, and all sound great as they are, so this is certainly something more than purely DJ fodder.

Throughout there’s a nice mix of blatantly synthetic sounds and refreshingly unprocessed samples. This shows up in a variety of moods and manners, from the opening “Bob” with its bass guitar groove and angular synth riff, through “The Pinger” where a Kraut-rocky muscular rhythm guitar drops in and out against a collection of subtly building electro percussion, to the more contemplative guitar loop of “Untitled” set on edge against a punchy rhythm section.

All up, the tracks are somewhat unassuming. Nothing leapt out at me, but something keeps bringing me back. I’d recommend it unreservedly to anyone who’s enjoyed the hip-hop side of Detroit, or just anyone who wants to hear something fresh and groove-laden.
