(July 2010) There aren’t too many UK-based labels that have taken up the mantle of parred back electro. One which has, and has turned a few heads in doing so, is Cultivated Electronics. The London based imprint has been on the go now since 2007, and since its inception has been about no nonsense electro. The imprint has recently expanded its catalogue with a collaboration 12″ by label boss Sync 24 and Miami based Alpha 606.
Alpha 606 has developed a pretty impressive discography for himself, with EP’s on the likes Interdimensional Transmissions whilst lending tracks to labels like Minimal Rome, Touchin’ Bass and Transient Force to name but a few. This latest 12″ sees Miami meet London for a two tracker. The EP opens with “Lunar Passport.” The track is an uncompromising piece of electro, in a similar vein to what Cultivated Electronics have been promulgating since the get go. The track is cold and clinical, working analogue tones into Dopplereffekt edged electro minus the halting vocals. The flipside of “Forest Communication” sees the duo leaving the moonbase and entering into a much more upbeat aspect. Warbling synths and bass meet 808 and an element of funk to produce a dancefloor feel from stark tools.
Cutlivated Electronics is a label that is finding a niche for itself. Its sound is not as minimal as say Stilleben or even some Solar One material, yet it does not stray too far off the track. For those after clean cut electro, which can be hard enough to find on a UK label, this is it.
