57 Shadows :: Blax Mint EP (Clean Error)

A welcomed, if not all too brisk, extended player for those who recognize IDM’s origins and are open to its continued relevance in these roaring 20s.

Just enough emotive fuel to keep us fully engaged

Clean Error manages to keep the proverbial IDM torch lit; the exquisite nature of 57 Shadows’ Blax Mint EP, composed of five tracks that combined add up to a brief 12-minutes, provides just enough emotive fuel to keep us fully engaged. Opening with the brittle blips and bleeps of the title track, here we see IDM’s past shine bright; an Arovane, Gimmik, Plone, and Proem mesh of polished melodies and rhythms. On “Furyloop hold,” 57 Shadows stays true to sparkling notes and glitchy beatwork as the 58 seconds of “k33d” shatter, rattle, and click their way through lullaby motifs. Slipping through delicate loops on “Restless,” the unique ability to tangle just the right amount of emotion and crunchy nostalgic IDM flurries is astounding. “Surpsiin3” closes and unfolds in a mere 86 seconds of warmed-up synth lines and subtle beat patches that ebb and flow with a soft growl. A welcomed, if not all too brisk, extended player for those who recognize IDM’s origins and are open to its continued relevance in these roaring 20s.
