From the Liner notes: How many times have you been faced with tragedy? Personal tragedy, national tragedy, global tragedy – there’s no shortage in any arena. How we respond to the suffering of our fellow residents of the planet defines, to a large extent, who we are. There have been no shortage of events that call in to question the sincerity of humanity’s commitment to itself (the US election of 2004 comes to mind…). However, the reaction to the Tsunami disaster has been one of the most dramatic examples of global virtue in recent history.
West4East started the same way that every other benefit project does – we sat and watched with horror the initial accounts of the devastation and knew we had to help. We wondered how we could transcend the act of simply writing a check? The answer was a benefit album – not one of those “portion of the proceeds” affairs – one where ALL money collected goes straight to the charity. So a call was put out to a broad spectrum of electronic musicians and the response was nothing short of incredible. Top artists sent donated some of their best material. This was quickly followed by donations of advertising, production, design and promotional services. In short, people whom had never met face-to-face got together and produced an ambitious project and got it ready for retail in less than 30 days.
West4East has had a very positive affect on my view of human nature. I have been moved by the genuine altruism shown by all of the people who have contributed to this project. I’m gratified by the support that we have received from the companies, large and small, that have made this CD possible. Most of all, I’m impressed with you. You’ve been inundated with heart-wrenching appeals for help for quite awhile now, and yet you dug down one more time to fork over the money for this album. I applaud you for doing a little bit more to help. >> Howard Hecht (Unschooled Records)
