Red Snapper make their eagerly awaited return with a brand new single and video on revered independent imprint Lo Recordings on the 18th of September 2020.
“Truth 1” is the band’s first new material since 2014 and is the lead track in a series of three Red Snapper singles which are set to be shared over the next six months prior to the release of a new album next year. The track is accompanied by an enthralling video by filmmakers Nick Brown and Dan Brown at Mash Cinema and featuring the dancer Kennedy Harris.
The follow up to the acclaimed Hyena album (the soundtrack to Senegalese film Touki Bouki —restored by Martin Scorsese), the new tune is a celebratory and impassioned outburst that has been brewing for the past six years and sees them embrace the spirit of Afro-Jazz and its itchy danceability. The beautiful deep, soulful and funky sound delivered here is a natural nod back to their previous recorded material, but there’s a fresh energy and a distinct move forwards towards new musical ground.
“Truth 1” features the original Red Snapper line up of Ali Friend (double bass), Rich Thair (drums) and David Ayers (guitar) together with Tom Challenger on saxophone. Always truly innovative, the band’s instrumentation wraps itself around a repeating Moog line while Ali’s vocals add a layer of intrigue and purpose like Bootsy Collins let loose at a political seminar. The track is accompanied by a video by filmmakers Nick Brown and Dan Brown at Mash Cinema.

Formed in 1994, Red Snapper are best known for their unique sound and passionate live performances where they embrace dark funk, hip-hop, dub, psychedelic surf, afro-jazz and beautiful, fragile soundscapes. A compilation of their early EPs Reeled and Skinned was released on Warp Records who consequently went on to put out the ground breaking debut album Prince Blimey in 1996.
Over the last two decades the band have released a string of widely acclaimed albums, toured globally and supported the likes of Massive Attack, Bjork, The Prodigy, De La Soul and The Fugees. They also acquired a reputation for their expansive remixing—reworking tunes by Trouble Funk, Garbage, Lamb and Edwyn Collins amongst others.
During the current debilitating lockdown Red Snapper have taken the opportunity to concentrate on working on the forthcoming new album.
