Sunao Inami :: Albums 1-6 (Electr-ohm)

From heavily distorted bass to rugged beats drenched in cybernetic blips and bleeps, each album exhibits otherworldly soundscapes, scrapes, and manipulated mayhem that could only come from a dedicated sonic craftsman. Sure, there are recognized musicians such as Autechre and Richard Devine treading similar terrain, but there’s something extraterrestrial about Inami’s work that breaks the mold, that simply ventures on its own, and that ultimately punctuates the arcane, distorted, and curious voids of exp-electronics with precision.

Electr-ohm label head, Cave Studio orchestrator, and resident Japan-based farmer, Sunao Inami has an abundance of broken sounds to offer with the unveiling of six—yes six—albums worth of unreleased material from 2018. 41-tracks, 165-minutes, and a varied mixture of cutting-edge experimental electronics in the form of IDM, industrial, abstract, rhythmic noise, and leftfield ambience, Inami’s sound is very much intact and explosive.

From heavily distorted bass to rugged beats drenched in cybernetic blips and bleeps, each album exhibits otherworldly soundscapes, scrapes, and manipulated mayhem that could only come from a dedicated sonic craftsman. And while it’s difficult to elaborate on the vast audio sculptures presented on each album, it’s not surprising that Inami built his own Internet servers and started creating improvised electronic music back in the 90’s—his adeptness and distinct signature sounds are nothing short of mind-bending.

Having such a varied background, his first album released on SubRosa in 1998 was only the start of what was to be explored in the years ahead. One of the leading artists in the world of abstract electronic music, each of the these six releases rips open an expansive and hypnotic foray into uncharted space. Sure, there are recognized musicians such as Autechre and Richard Devine treading similar terrain, but there’s something extraterrestrial about Inami’s work that breaks the mold, that simply ventures on its own, and that ultimately punctuates the arcane, distorted, and curious voids of the above-mentioned genres with precision.

A surprising, multi-faceted assortment of electronic music (in both modular and organic formation) that is best experienced in random playlist order. From mechanical noises to blissfully shattered ambient fissures, to crunchy low-end slabs, Sunao Inami continues to expand the envelope and leaves his listeners in a bewildered state start to end.

All six albums are available on AppleMusic or iTunes.
