Solypsis was clearly not out to make an album for the masses. From this perspective, this release is most definitely a success and recommended for those who like their music on the dissonant and noisy end of the spectrum.
[Listen | Purchase] On Boiling Ambergris, Solypsis presents us with seven original tracks of noisy percussive explorations and five drastic remixes by Meat Beat Manifesto, Terminal 11. Rev777, Beytah, and Dapose. With track titles like “Boiled Alive in Fucking Vomit” and “The Birth of a Cyst,” the listeners should not be surprised one bit about the sonic terrorism about to be unleashed upon their eardrums.
Drums on this release are pushed to the forefront and processed through all manner of distortions, reductions and wave-shaping. The overall feel of Boiling Ambergris is very mechanical with the human elements only shining through for brief moments. On “Absolute Brutality,” Solypsis uses a palette of metal percussion and produces a sound that would fit very well in the Tetsuo: The Iron Man soundtrack. As for the remixes, the clear standout is Meat Beat Manifesto’s reconstruction of “Perpetually Out of Sorts” which gives the track a bass heavy treatment with low pitched robotic vocals and noisy synths. This remix comes across like a dirtier and more distorted version of Meat Beat’s recent Answer’s Come In Dreams album. Rev777’s mix of “Sonic Whale Destruction” is a relentless maelstrom of chaotic noise only stopping to drop in a excerpt recitation of Melville’s “Moby Dick.” Boiling Ambergris, at times, can be a difficult listen. I believe this is by intent and Solypsis was clearly not out to make an album for the masses. From this perspective, this release is most definitely a success and recommended for those who like their music on the dissonant and noisy end of the spectrum.
