Solypsis :: Recidivist (Component)

Solypsis drives a powerful wedge through the whole electronic scene—leaving a jagged and bumpy trail that very few are able to replicate.

An explosively surreal collection

Solypsis (aka James Miller) extracts every possible ounce of sound from a seemingly wide range of machines—creating expressive and punctuated rhythmic noise that is simply out of this world. The title track adheres to the artist’s knack for broken industrial bass exploits and rugged grooves that continue to grow as the minutes unfold. But even when the Arizonian manages to calm things down, it only means that he’s found another glitch to unfold or a corrosive break to manipulate. Maybe the desert air has something to do with it?

On tracks like “Arthritus,” a pulsating and destructive flow can’t be ignored. Hypnotically dense in construction, raw materials collide with an eventual 4/4 pattern as it stands upright with a tempered and impenetrable industrial backbone. Recidivist delves through a myriad of exp-electronic genres, so just when you think you’re beginning to grasp what’s going on, tracks like “Quakes” change your perspective. Pseudo-downtempo drums and tangled synths spark just enough to set a small fire at the curbside. All harsh noises and pummeling machine music aside, Solypsis closes Recidivist with perhaps the most tranquilized slice of the lot. The aptly titled “Elegy” is an (almost) beat-less sojourn until it begins to implode and skitters midway through—only to revert back to its original form and evaporate like nothing ever happened.

An explosively surreal collection, Solypsis drives a powerful wedge through the whole electronic scene—leaving a jagged and bumpy trail that very few are able to replicate.
