Flock manages to move forward and simultaneously break down in the most obscure, yet alluring fashion.
Seven tracks spread across 28-minutes, this time we see Soletik on an augmented trajectory. Having previously covered Directional (Fusion, 2017), described as “skewed and aggressive glitch with Autechre versus Richard Devine-inspired life forms,” here we see Flock administered with brittle sub-structures, and just as fractured as before. “Still Only” delves into minimal techno terrain, its mechanical pulse sliced and diced with brittle melodic notes dancing about. “Under The Surface” segues into an abstracted pathway, echoes abound, subtle clicks and cuts cascade, and its rhythm degradation closes the final minutes. Elsewhere you’ve find modular machinery evolving into subtle post-industrial formations and corrosive sound design on “Less Than 8” and “Semaphore Echoes.” Broken and tormented to no end, the synthesizers are on overdrive with “Dispitch” just as Soletik soothes everything out on “Into Minus”—a synaptic tone made from various crumpled sound effects somehow keeps its tempo—elseq fans take note! The black sheep of the family being “Marry,” its erratic glitch’n bass onslaught rests firmly in exploratory fields. Overall, Flock manages to move forward and simultaneously break down in the most obscure, yet alluring fashion.
