Brittney Sparse, a Chang Terhune (aka Cathode Ray Tube) moniker, churns another extended player for his own Condition:Human imprint. On repeat around these parts, Triumph of a Horse Called Radioman yields emotive, dubby, and downtempo grooves concealed in a technoid sphere.
“Radio Man I (This Is Radio Man)” sets the scene with surreal, playful electric bits and bobbles—the magnetic whirlwind and noisy elements meld in perfect formation as 4/4 beats shift into focus. “Radio Menschen II (Radio Man Inna Berliner Style)” takes a more robo-techno direction, its wobbly rhythms are drenched in damp drones and foggy soundscapes. “Radio Man III (Do The Queazy Pete)” falls into experimental terrain–encrusted percussion and ambient flutter maintains focus as this Horse Called Radioman transforms into a pleasant dreamlike state. Terhune delivers curious sonic abstracts from start to end. “Radio Man IV In Dub (Duppy Wankerer)” dives into the trenches as slow-motion drum patches drift by. “Radio Meng V” offers some light at the end of the tunnel where pleasant melodic streams are highlighted by classic Aphex Twin-like chirps, whirs, and disjointed clicks and cuts. Closing with the oddly titled “Ronnie James Dildo,” Brittney Sparse doesn’t seem too concerned with semantics, but instead details a dub-techno strain and eroded electronic sound that is both relaxing and contemplative.
Chilled and refined, this EP is a well-tuned subspace-techno machine.
