Scotland based sound designer and multi-media artist Mark Lyken has developed a collection of rare cinematic experiences, notably in collaboration with Emma Dove. My first immersion into his work was with his album Mirror Lands (Time Released Sound, 2014). This “hauntology” music is built on mnemonic ambient minimalist scenes and surrounded by a sonic sensibility, engaged visual referents made a great impression.
The new release published on Important Records carries on the exploration of highly evocative sound textures, examining the meaning of subjective memory, time, space and personal interactions with the objective world. Soundscapes, reticular and processed music are conceived in a vast networks of repetitive phrases, loops, concrete noises, metallic echoes and drones. The sense of listening is used as a method of exploration on the sonic life-world. The soundscapes are intentionally turned to slowly gestual movements, sometimes hypnotic with blurry, dark and mysterious dynamics. The Terrestrial Sea is at the crossings of kinetic minimalist music, electro-acoustic creativity and spectrally waving ambient.
