Spin Marvel :: Infolding

From day one the people over at RareNoise have set a goal for themselves: putting out outrageous, genre-bending, innovative music. So far, they have been delivering the goods. With the latest offering by the London-based multifaceted label, the colorful exploration in uncharted sonic territories continues. The six-track album comes courtesy of Spin Marvel—the project of prolific drummer Martin France—and carries the title Infolding. France’s co-conspirators on Infolding are renowned trumpeter and innovator Nils Petter Molvaer, bassist Tim Harries (formerly of Bill Bruford’s Earthworks), percussionist and sound designer Terje Evensen and drummer-producer Emre Ramazanoglu. A dream team one might say.

Infolding, as one would expect from such a meeting of creative minds, is full of unexpected space blasts and sharp, dangerous twists and turns. A mind-bending and skull-cracking hour of dreamy, hazy ambient drifts, explosive free jazz explorations and bursts of electronic esoterica. Everything blends and flows together cunningly and effortlessly. From the epic, extragalactic opening track, “Canonical,” to the abstract closing piece, “Minus Two,” Infolding holds a sense of adventure. Layers of brass witchcraft hypnotically light the way, powerful, fierce basslines roll forward, whirlwinds of drums twist and crash all over. Everything is spiced with electronic sparks and moves with a sense of organized chaos. Turbulent, malicious.

While the Spin Marvel boys don’t reinvent the genre, they certainly refresh it in an enticing way. In this day and age, when sonic recycling is flooding every corner of the far-flung musical spectrum, some refreshing music is always more than welcome. If this is you’re first encounter with RareNoise, you should definitely browse through the label’s catalog for some more sonic refreshment.
