V/A ‘Crazy Compilation #5’

Approximately two and a half hours are available as a free MP3 compilation via the kind folks at Crazy Language (CL), a Berlin-based collective of audio experimentalists whose output (including visuals) covers the entire spectrum of future worlds, welding all forms electronics into one cohesive flow. Already on Crazy Compilation #5, CL have reached out to a vast handful of musicians, all with their own particular mission of transmitting next-level acoustics. This collation of tracks is the quintessential reference point for current, mind-tingling and earth-shattering styles. It’s quite a task to sit back and digest all that is on offer and the best possible method to accomplish this is with a broad stroke of commentary; most of it relating to the look and feel of Crazy Compilation #5 rather than a dissection of its individual parts.

Nothing short of complex with evenly distributed beats, Crazy Compilation #5 spans through the gauntlet of variation and does so by introducing tracks that push and pull the heartstrings (ref. Exosphere, Enabl.ed, Huron as examples) while delivering lively takes on crumpled percussion and rhythmic acrobatics. It’s the creative assembly and stylistic range of electronics (IDM, ambient, broken-beat etc.) that keeps this collection flowing as a definitive package. These manipulations are illustrated with great effect by artists such as DNN, Pleq and ENV(itre); their contributions casually flutter about with ease and precision just as gradual transitions and sparkling melodies dabble in the background. And yet with so much to discuss it’s much easier to simply point your cursor to the Soundcloud audio (below) to obtain the best possible taste of what you’re getting into. The overall package (as mentioned earlier) is where this compilation scores highly; its abundance of music may initially feel like a huge undertaking to discover, however, there’s some breathing room throughout with the focus being rhythm and style rather than mere quantity. Sure, the imprint might have been just as successful trimming the overflow slightly, but with the amount of square-footage Crazy Compilation #5 covers, it’s the panoramic vision of its sculptors that allows the music to become truly timeless.

Crazy Language are on the forefront of manifesting their unusually attractive sonic shapes (and shadows) and it’s no wonder artists like Yvat, Rec_Overflow, Randomform, AZ-Rotator, Lucidstatic (and many others) are more than willing to dive-in and become part of this thick interwoven fabric of sound and vision. At this price, it’s a steal.

Crazy Compilation #5 is out now on Crazy Language and available as a free digital download.
