Boris Divider :: Aeon (Drivecom)

Intimate soundscapes that ascend into the sublime. There are obvious echoes of Vangelis in here but Boris amplifies their captivation, looping the listener into a capsule of caressing chords and soulful sci-fi synth.

Boris Divider is one of the brightest lights in Spanish electronics. For years the Madrid born artist has explored Electronics on labels like Satamile and Sematica. In his time the Cuenca resident has focused on the colder moods of Electro but since his album The Source, released on his Drivecom label in 2012 warmer currents have begun to thaw the frost. He now returns to Drivecom with a new avenue of sound, Aeon.

The sounds of 70s synthesizer pioneers and movie soundtracks have been the inspiration behind Aeon. As the record starts the likes of Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter come to mind. “Newcomer from Taurus” starts the flight. Rich and textured arrangements pour forth. Cosmic ambience whispers, building into a rolling harmony. The track is heady, reverberating bars washing over the listener in ever warmer waves. Much of the EP was made during periods of experimentation, extended sessions in the studio and late night oscillation. “Gamma Ray Children” maintains the rumbling intensity of its predecessor. Arcs of synth orbit reverberation before satellite echoes pierce. The title piece is an absolute epic. Rolling chords envelope one another, lapping and overlapping before strings are sent skyward in this textured work of electronics. The Iberian astronaut decides to keep going, leaving earth’s orbit and charging ever deeper into space with “Rings of the Seventh Planet.” Synth spheres are shot across bows of lush chords. Melodies bend under their own gravity, curving into concentric circles of sound as the blue dot fades into starlight.

Earlier this year I caught Boris’ live show in Madrid. I was treated to an evening of analogue absorption. Melodies melted into one another as an intoxicating audio visual experience was served up through the aging cables of vintage electronic equipment. Aeon is that night revived. Intimate soundscapes that ascend into the sublime. There are obvious echoes of Vangelis in here but Boris amplifies their captivation, looping the listener into a capsule of caressing chords and soulful sci-fi synth.

Aeon is available on Drivecom.
