It would be hard to describe the sounds propelled from this disc without highlighting the fact that old machines may have been hurt in the making of this recording. Odd tweaks, squeaks and screeches bend and mold into fragmented melodies, most of the time tapping away at your tweeter more than anything else. And there are a few moments in which casually laid out tracks such as “808=rock” and “Electraset” compliment your ears with softly placed acid hooks and Plastikman sounding rhythms. It’s a strange concoction to say the least, but somehow it all fits together like several pieces of a puzzle.
Dismantling sounds on Audio Dismantle is something that Modula do quite well. The press release snippet below is right on target:
Step sequencing, home made drum machines, poorly maintained and even broken synthesizers combined with aging effects processors make this a definitively analogue sounding release. Not for purists, experimental electronica at its jammist.
Even with the peculiar elements on Audio Dismantle that scratch your ears, the results are a hybrid between clicky experiments and soft structures. Not a highlight of this year, but one that should remain at the top of your cd rack for months to come.
