comdex release full-length set A Wave Of Alarm collectively presents as a waltz through the heart of the human experience, tracing a passage through difficulty, fracture, and emotional attrition before ultimately emerging renewed and illuminated. Across its duration, the record navigates the long architecture of inner turbulence, invoking something akin to a dark night of the soul: a descent into fertile voids where collapse and liberation begin to mirror one another.
The album’s tonal language is built from a carefully layered convergence of white-noise ruptures, pink-toned high frequencies, cavernous dub ascensions, strummed arteries of melody, and distant vocal laments that drift through the compositions like fragmented memories attempting reassembly. On “Excellent Moves,” a guitar refrain evokes Bond-era John Barry or the early solo output of Barry Adamson following his departure from Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Elsewhere, “Dive in Me” goes full tribal drum-circle in a percussive showdown fitting for the sweltering day in which I write. Other notable mentions are “Survival Condo” with its Dub Syndicate and Pole sensibilities and the raw and bloodied steppa’ arrival that is the wondrously hot “Jumper.”
Rather than functioning purely as atmosphere, these textures operate as emotional cartography, mapping an oscillating tension that traces an arc between endurance and transcendence with remarkable musical sensitivity. There is a beautiful iridescent quality to the production throughout, where abrasion and warmth continually fold into one another, allowing moments that feel simultaneously like grief and necessary pressure before releasing that tension within the same frame. A Wave Of Alarm does not merely soundtrack struggle; it proposes transformation through it, arriving finally at a place of fragile but undeniable radiance.
