Seeking the Mellow-D in MD

Share this ::

There have been a good assortment of electronics coming out of Finland these past few years; Lackluster, PanSonic and Vladislav Delay, Brothomstates are only a few. MD emerges from the experimental end of the spectrum while still maintaining a foothold on the melody driven beatscapes that he creates so well. Mellow-D (MD) also happens to be a previous alias he used to release tracks during the demo-scene.

Igloo had a chance to catch up with Jaakko (born in Finland –currently residing in the UK) recently in a mini-interview session:

Igloo: Can you tell me a bit about your background?

MD: Was born some time ago, started doing music with trackers about 10 years ago.

Igloo: What have you been up to lately?

MD: Just released Appelsap a month or so ago, an album originally made in 1998 and released as mp3’s. It was put out as cd by Merck Records, and also contains remixes by Brothomstates, Ilkae, Frank Bolero, Thug, Xhale, and Crankshaft.

Igloo: How did the remixes from Appelsap start?

MD: Well I asked some friends for remixes, some had already been done previously. The remixes were compiled in the summer of 2000.

Igloo: How did you get involved with Merck Records?

MD: I got involved with Merck thru the net, they contacted me after hearing Appelsap and wanted to release it on cd.

Igloo: Is there anything in particular that you’ve been working on recently, or that is upcoming?

MD: Up and coming is a bit hush hush at the moment, I can say 2001 will see several MD full-lengths, maybe on different names, maybe not. (Between Gaps)

Igloo: Is it just a coincidence that there are so many Finnish artist’s emerging into the scene?

MD: It might have something to do with the Finnish love of technology and the internet.

Jaakko Manninen’s latest full-length release with Merck Records is the much discussed Between Gaps. Combining thick melodies with burning wires that meander peacefully amongst dense rhythms –MD’s latest title subtly works on wave patterns that transform into beautifully placed electronic mayhem. Recommended.
