MD :: Appelsap (Merck)

Jaakko Manninen is MD, a Finnish artist who records for Merck Records (Miami, Florida), is also beginning to create sonic ripples in the experimental ocean of electronics. It won’t be long until people across the globe begin to pick up on Jaakko’s
digital symphony of complex music.

Many of the tracks on Appelsap run parallel to the crisp and percussive rhythm’s of Art-Tek recording artist Fizzarum. With the tiny melodies and loose beats wrapped around Appelsap, your brain cells begin to slowly re-energize with each listen while the drifting ambient undertones sweep your thoughts away.

The first 11 tracks on this 64-minute full-length are produced by MD. Tracks 12-17 are remixes from various friends including Ilkae (Aaron Munson), Thug (Tim Koch), Frank Bolero (Fredrik Aslund), Xhale (Erik Skodvin), Crankshaft (Mikko Karvonen) and Brothomstates (Lassi Nikko). These tracks in particular retain a distinct texture that not only compliments the artist remixing, but highlight’s MD’s original mix. When you hit the “random” button on your cd-player, it will be hard to distinguish who’s who on this full-length as it incorporates such a wide range of instrumental electronics, mechanical ambience and skittery bass rhythm’s that your ears will be content with the results either way you play it. Brothomstates and Thug are the highlight remixers here, no doubt.

Fans of Art-Tek, Toshoklabs, Worm Interface and Merck’s Squadron compilation should pay close attention to this release. Appelsap casually unveil’s a sonic platform of crispy electronics that starts and finishes with what seems to be an emphasis on quality atmospherics and disjointed beats. Works for me..

MD –meandering debris or musical decadence? You decide.
