Beautiful deconstructive patterns
Panopticum’s aptly-titled Multisensory Metaphors is a densely-packed EP combining meditative downtempo electronics, glitch, electro, and IDM in beautiful deconstructive patterns. Exploring a range of emotionally-charged soundscapes and landscapes as far as the eye can see (and feel), this five-track suite, which the press release accurately describes as “an endless ocean,” kicks off with the gripping glitch tentacles of “Awakening” before the pulsing pitter-patter breaks of “Phantasmagoria” delves into Warp Records’ Artificial Intelligence-era layers from the mid-1990s. While “Inevitable” jars the senses with its illbient and technoid spheres repeating endlessly, “Almanac” and our favorite of the lot, “Paradigm,” maintain deeper industrial-electronic and sci-fi infused abstracts. A very impressive assortment of cutting-edge sonic devices that tops our Best of 2024 list.
