Trusting negative space

Seemingly appearing from a giant, empty iron vessel in a slow-moving state, Joachim Spieth’s latest release, Blended, unfolds as a restrained but assured set of low-end archetypes, well attuned to the season. Space is the governing principle across ten deep cuts, each given room to breathe, hover, and subtly erode its own edges.

Listening in the early hours of the morning as I did, the record reveals its strength through depth and focus. These tracks do not announce themselves so much as accumulate presence. Distant, reverberant mechanics pulse gently beneath smog-like atmospherics; bass tones are felt more than heard, while ghosted delays trace faint outlines in the air. The music moves at a deliberate pace, encouraging immersion rather than momentum, its minimal gestures weighted with intent.

There is a tactile quality to the sound design: soft-focus echoes, pressure-sensitive rhythms, and an almost olfactory sense of atmosphere, as if imagined scents were suspended in the mix. It is an inward, clandestine comfort—music that rewards close listening and temporal slack, rather than demanding attention.

The inclusion of 4/4 remixes from G-Man, Reggie Van Oers, and Claudio PRC introduce an alternate energy source without disrupting the core aesthetic. Their versions tighten the frame, offering increased propulsion and DJ functionality while retaining the record’s spacious logic. Rather than mere additions, they refract the material, colouring the palette with subtle diversity and extending its usefulness beyond solitary listening.

Measured, cohesive, and quietly confident, this is a slender but considered work—one that trusts negative space as much as sound, and finds depth not in excess, but in restraint.
