Belgium-based sound-art project ‘t Geruis, the alias of Daniël Jolan, crafts deeply introspective ambient compositions rich in textured, grainy detail and emotionally immersive soundscapes. His latest release on Home Normal leans into shadowy drones and decaying acoustic fragments, evoking a melancholic elegance reminiscent of William Basinski and Miguel Angel Tolosa.

Belgium based sound-art / ambient-tape project ‘t Geruis is the alias of Daniël Jolan. I discovered his work back in time with his album Various Thoughts and Places released on the sublime indie label Lost Tribe Sound—highly recommended if you appreciate devotional and neoclassical and mystical soundscapes processing elegant dialogues between acoustic instrumentation and humanized moving experimentations.

I discovered his other works later, notably thanks to Laaps Records. His entire discography left a strong impression with its emotionally transportive sound textures and moments of wistful grace, veiled in grainy scintillations. The dreamily introspective nature and autumnal inner splendor of ‘t Geruis find echoes in this new album, which leans more toward decaying, shadowy drone vibrations—engulfed, then fragmented and convoluted acoustic sequences, notably shaped by the piano.

This album is produced and distributed by the key indie ambient label Home Normal. Its intrinsically blurry tonal dimension, persistent dusty soundscapes, and dreary scenographic shimmers draw comparisons to other artists on the label, particularly See+ I and Far Away Nebraska. All in all, it’s a well-crafted, dust-laden, atmospheric, and bittersweet ambient album—clearly a personal favorite this year, and one I’d easily recommend to fans of darkly romantic, minimal, and intoxicatingly hazy electronic isolationism in the vein of William Basinski, Miguel Angel Tolosa, Slow Blink, Danny Clay, and Greg Gorlen.
