EP No. 2 is a febrile weave of introspective ambient and diverse electronic elements spawned in Plasma Studio Spain and IRCAM Paris sessions with vibrant forms of deep drone, glitchy percussives and glassine texture deployed in the service of sound world-making at once reflective and unsettling to deliver a resonant narrative inhabiting liminal space between contemporary sound art and immersive cinema.
Murcof explores nostalgia, space, isolation
A diverting epilog to the first episode of Twin Color, Murcof’s Extended Play No. 2 blends re-imagined commissioned works and A/V-ready pieces. A 6-track set ideated in the pandemic, companion to Extended Play No. 1 and the Vol. I album, it serves to push the Twin Color series beyond the familiar for the Mexican composer/producer. The pieces belong to a specific part of Fernando Corona’s life when, turned 50, he was gifted space by lockdown to reflect on early influences (new wave, synth pop), lending the material a deep sense of nostalgia.
Opener “The Fall” was to be part of a soundtrack to a sci-fi video game that never was (cf. Twin Color Vol.I‘s “All These Worlds”). Intended for a scene where sentient aliens sacrifice themselves for future generations’ survival, it forms an ethereal prelude. “Cosmic Drifter” (edit version) voices an industrial-tinged meditation on isolation and cosmic angst, pounding synthetics heralding an interstellar overture with celestial bells and voices emerging from an analog texture wall like a lost deep space emission. On “Like Halloween” Murcof forges his own eerie two-part OST, channeling horror cult classics as much as Kubrick. The first half builds on treated vox (daughter, Alina) and ’80s synth-sweep, presaging a climax of ominous bass and a vintage ballad evoking strange encounters in an anxious symphony of abstracted technology twixt darkened dancefloor and installation. “When The Need Is Gone – edit” retains tension with its spectral vox floating over an FX bed evoking Blade Runner’s neon streets. It closes almost tranquilly with “Tomorrow Part 1 – edit” led by a synth line drifting with mystic-inflected cadence toward a cosmic horizon.
In sum, EP No.
