Despite a 2,500-mile distance and sprawling solo discographies, Snowbeasts and Solypsis operate here as if face-to-face—crushing boundaries, igniting audio wreckage, and forging bold new altars of sound.
This is brutalist sound architecture
Some of the darkest industrial electronic limbs coil tightly on Extinction Burst—a ferocious, illbient-driven colossus that rockets straight onto our best of 2025 shortlist. Now halfway through the year, amid countless standout collaborations, Snowbeasts (Robert Galbraith and Elizabeth Virosa) and Solypsis (James Miller) carve out something volatile, pulsing with a sinister momentum and bone-rattling slow-motion breaks that shake the very air around us.
“Predator State” opens the floodgates with guttural bass and shredded synths, dragging listeners through a swamp of distortion while some prehistoric, metallic screech slices through like a digitized beast from another era. On “Absence of Life,” fractured rhythms collide with Virosa’s ghostlike vocals, threading through broken circuits and battered signal trails.
This is brutalist sound architecture—what you’d expect from veterans like Scorn, The Panacea, Submerged, or Mothboy: mangled breakbeats, snarling low-end, and percussion that ricochets like a weaponized machine shop. As the record surges forward, the descent grows steeper. “Betrayal” channels a haunting throwback to Rhys Fulber’s mechanical atmospheres, dragging its slow-burning cadence into interstellar voids. Meanwhile, “Splinterhead” hits with a barrage—an electrified shield of rhythm that overwhelms and obliterates.
Closing with a momentary exhale on “Self Fulfilling Eschatology,” the duo offers no comfort, only a brief, eerie calm. Despite a 2,500-mile distance and sprawling solo discographies, Snowbeasts and Solypsis operate here as if face-to-face—crushing boundaries, igniting audio wreckage, and forging bold new altars of sound.
