Compact yet immersive, Welcome to The Aviary is a cohesive narrative of sonic exploration. Mechanoreceptor conjures a detailed, imaginative world in just six tracks, balancing momentum with meditation, structure with shimmer.

Mechanoreceptor’s Welcome to The Aviary is less an EP than a guided flight through textured sonic terrain—a conceptual suite where machine logic and dream imagery blur. Released on Bass Agenda Recordings, the six tracks unfold like a journey: a sequence of vistas drawn from somewhere between subconscious memory and sci-fi propulsion. From the very first tones of opener “Gliding Metal Dart (Flight Initiated),” the listener is airborne, propelled by sharp electro rhythms and shimmering pads that suggest both urgency and awe.

Mechanoreceptor is the alias of Wiremu Hohaia, a Berlin-based producer, writer, DJ, and visual artist originally from New Zealand. With a background in sensory neuroscience, Hohaia approaches music through the lens of perception, often translating visual phenomena into intricate sonic landscapes. His work under the Mechanoreceptor name explores a semi-fictional realm known as the Aviary—a world where memory, bioluminescence, and sonic abstraction intersect.

This is a record fascinated with motion—forward, skyward, inward. There are clear nods to Detroit electro (think Drexciya or Dopplereffekt) in the crisp low-end programming and stark synthetic architecture, but Mechanoreceptor builds in layers of ambient unease and melodic flourish more akin to Biosphere or early Autechre. The second track, “The Secret Portal,” shifts into more introspective territory: sparse beats ricochet through a cave of reverberant drones, evoking a cautious step into unknown dimensions.

“The Aviary Express” is a highlight, reviving kinetic momentum with a driving groove and glitched melodic filigree—Orbital by way of a chrome-plated aviary. Then comes “Minor Turbulence,” its fragmented percussion and static-laced haze a nod to the textured dissonance of Vladislav Delay or early Pan Sonic. It’s unsettling but brief, a momentary storm on this aerial voyage.

As the EP descends, we enter its most luminous space with “Angelic Bioluminescence,” where ambient washes and pulsing synths create the sensation of floating in a darkened sea, lit from within. It’s the album’s emotional center, calling to mind the blurred nostalgia of Boards of Canada or the gentle propulsion of Huerco S. The closing title track ties everything together with dubby echoes and slow-bloom melodies, welcoming the listener into a sanctuary of memory and reverie—the Aviary as metaphor for the hippocampus, a refuge for fragmented recollections.

Compact yet immersive, Welcome to The Aviary is a cohesive narrative of sonic exploration. Mechanoreceptor conjures a detailed, imaginative world in just six tracks, balancing momentum with meditation, structure with shimmer. It’s a rewarding listen for fans of cinematic electro, ambient techno, and the liminal spaces in between.
