Secret Agent Gel :: Tiny + Tired (Self Released, CDr)

Corey Maass (a.k.a. Secret Agent Gel) sent IglooMag.com his most recent 6-track demo of acoustic-electro-funk to our offices in hopes of a review back in July 2003. Well, we’re glad this CDr landed in our CD-tray safely, and over the weeks we’ve had a chance to absorb the frequencies herein. With a tentatively planned release coming up on Brooklyn’s Record Camp label, SAG’s musical approach combines simple electro transfusions next to wobbly melodies and snappy rhythms.

SAG has explored quite a range of territory over the past few years, most notably working with Belgian artist collective Lab[AU] at the New Museum in NY, contributing to the Electroclash compilation, Badd INC. (Mogul Electro), the Brooklyn Keeps On Takin’ It compilation (Record Camp), and having played numerous galleries, bars, clubs and raves while opening for bands such as Chicks on Speed, Datach’i and Tomas Jirku to name a few. But why haven’t we heard Secret Agent Gel’s music yet? That’s a tough question to answer, but rest assured SAG’s signature simplicity vs. confused sound-escapes will get noticed in due time.

Tiny + Tired‘s overall feeling encompasses elements of times past mixed with a trajectory view of the future. Upbeat electro weavings are blended with claustrophobic basslines rolling by with ease and control. At times, a jazzy extract reveals itself but never overextends its visit. While SAG creates unique electronic experiments, Tiny + Tired tends to subtly fall away from the edges without much notice. Tiny + Tired is an accomplished demo showing potential both in its direction and quality of production. At $3 per disc, this is a fine addition to anyone’s electronic collection.
