Cathode Ray Tube :: Overworld EP (Condition Human)

CRT delivers a surreal storm-surging soundtrack that breaks through with fragmented synthesis and industrial techno juxtaposition.

Cathode Ray Tube keeps blazing his own trail, where sci-fi glitch and industrial structures coexist. While the alarming synth swell of “No Concessions” batters the ears, “Tractor Logic” claws its way through with gnarled technoid and power electronics splinters, launching into a flurry of dilapidated rhythms. Charles Terhune, a prolific experimental sonic voyager based in Maine, has previously given us these stinging aural recipes, but this time there’s a twist.

The sheer strength of CRT’s aural canvass appears to be splitting open throughout Overworld. Tracks like the reverberating beat patches of “Dots on Dots Forever” and the muted industrial dub mechanics of “Safe Passage” ebb and flow through a labyrinth of concrete blocks and exploratory synth dynamics like pounding seas smashing upon a breakwater poised to breach. And these soundscapes somehow make their way to the seashore through minuscule faults, wreaking havoc in the process.

The closing piece titled “Mutation Specialist,” with its mechanized atmospheric noise-crossed signals, and the blips and bleeps beauty of “Kyroprekitt” further reinforce a sense of creative destruction as CRT delivers a surreal storm-surging soundtrack that breaks through with fragmented synthesis and industrial techno juxtaposition. While Overworld showcases a distinct horizon line where the underworld and overworld converge, its unrelenting electronics is set for futuristic dystopian landscapes.
