Hang Ruan and Nick Turner :: Flowers Bloom on a Withered Tree (Polar Seas)

Clearly enjoyable for a quiet home listening session on a rainy day, and ultimately a contemplative delight for your daydreaming moments.

I was listening this nicely meditative and moody-esque nostalgic piano centric ambient release during a grey Sunday evening. I’ve been really fond of Polar Seas‘ ability to present their audience the most acoustic, and let’s say semi-classical, aspects of modern day ambient music. Among their new CD issues Flowers Bloom on a Withered Tree is the result of a collaborative work between piano trained composer Hang Ruan and sound artist Nick Turner.

Detached, distant and reflective piano moments are subtly mixed with vibrant drone chords alongside various sound effects such as massive reverbs. The instruments and electronics beautifully interact to create a colorful and blurry sound tapestry filled with positive and plaintive resonances. A shimmering, bucolic, and minimal introverted musical voyage through infinite piano motifs which drop like a cold poetical snow. Flowers Bloom on a Withered Tree works like a fragile cinematic romance for the ears.

Fans of minimalist, processed and semi-improvised ambient piano airs of Simeon Walker, Tristan Eckerson as well as softly moving ambient delicacy from Ghost & Tapes, Ian Hawgood, and Will Bolton, might find a strong interest here. A balm for thought and easily suitable as background music for meditative and intellectual activities such as a writing. Clearly enjoyable for a quiet home listening session on a rainy day, and ultimately a contemplative delight for your daydreaming moments.
