NOXIN :: Dream Sequence (Evel)

It’s a baffling journey, or dream sequence rather, where NOXIN takes us through unusual paths, fractured bits and pieces sliced into tinier elements, both structured and deforming before us.

Tiny soundscapes dip into and out of our subconsciousness

We have to admit that NOXIN (aka João) is a new outfit to these ears. With several 100s of releases to digest, filter, and absorb, we’re constantly doing our best to eventually, somehow, jot into words, what we’re hearing. Yet with the aptly-titled Dream Sequence, it’s not just hearing, it’s feeling. There’s something microscopic happening in the background that seeps in; subtle fizz-fuzz and electrical activity; minimal extracts and organic sounds swirling in a haze. And as Dream Sequence continues on, these tiny soundscapes dip into and out of our subconsciousness, like Cirrus clouds that are at once there in front of us, only to transform and disappear. It’s a baffling journey, or dream sequence rather, where NOXIN takes us through unusual paths, fractured bits and pieces sliced into tinier elements, both structured and deforming before us.

The clicks ‘n cuts, glitch ‘n dub layers are ever so slightly tuned, only to unravel their mysteries one note at a time, and they eventually erode just as quickly. Artists like Pole, Oval, and Kit Clayton have been known to capture these sonic miniatures with maximum efficiency, yet NOXIN recreates those delicate moments and sounds of day-to-day life, within the constructs of audible fissures that continue to expand.

The static pulses, tones, drones, and crackling shadows that rhythmically cycle through both digitized and organic worlds is perhaps the highlight of Dream Sequence and its arcane ability to traverse areas left unexplored. A perplexing amalgamation of micro-rhythms, opaque melodics, and found sounds running rampant, just beneath our feet.

Dream Sequence is available on Evel. [Bandcamp]
