A classical array of layered spontaneity and detailed composition

Ariadne’s Labyrinth (aka Sharon Subbarao) is a classically trained violinist, pianist, composer and electronic artist. Following this years re-release of her 2017 debut EP Lost and Founded (available on Detroit Underground 2017 and on Touched Music’s sister label L50), the London based artist rounds off the year with an exemplary self-released 4-track titled Ridiom. Infusing influences from the likes of early Warp and Rephlex into a classical array of layered spontaneity and detailed composition.

Whilst these tracks showcase a familiarity with traits commonly baked within IDM from an electronic perspective that will surely please most, what breathes life into Ridiom is Ariadne’s Labyrinth’s approach to live musicianship, particularly the use of harmony and undeniably the quality string performances that act as organic and frantic arpeggiators, also as warming pad movements—I think it is fair to say, only a select few can really program MIDI to this level and even then it will never beat the real McCoy!

These orchestral injections carry not just emotion, there is a deliverance in adrenaline like that of a concerto when combined with the enigmatic mid-swept drums presenting rave tendencies with elements of hardcore breaks and techno. Never too harsh though, this EP is transcendent on many levels.

Supported by the Arts Council England to fund the project, it is wonderful to see these results come to fruition as Sharon Subbararo is definitely an artist that seems to be gaining more traction with each release.

For London readers, you can catch the EP launch party in South-London’s SPANNERS this Friday Dec 3. Ariadne’s Labyrinth will be performing live with opening support from Nullptr (CPU) and Kim Cosmik (Cybersoul).

Ridiom is available on Bandcamp.
