Gyu ‘Supreme Being EP’

[Release page] A wonderful embodiment of mood in a quality EP, Supreme Being pushes forth with an earlier 2000’s two-step/garage style forged with deep and bass heavy UK dubstep. Stylistically driven with Doppler dubbed-out melodies, syncopated grooves and infused with melodic accentuation. Gyu, a Bristol based producer currently residing in Moscow, releases Supreme Being as his second EP on UK’s Drawn Recordings, Cerebral being his first. This release delivers a more upbeat, higher energy excursion contained within three original tracks along with a remix by Hajee; all well fit for late night dance floors.

The EP’s first track, “Brother,” opens with classic (timeless) echoed UK rave pads and a tight two-step shuffled percussion filling in a vast and cold soundscape. Muted horn stabs peak in to compliment slow moving sub-basslines. Listeners will find it a faster paced and lighter, more uplifting, (almost jazzy) excursion when comparing the other tracks on this EP. “Falling Down” is the highlight on this EP with its high-energy swinging, soul clapping two-step chant, grabbing the listener as soon as it drops. An arrangement well suited for dark dance floors and carries a celestial mood with a deep indigenous core throughout. The accompaniment of vox harmony, drums and sub bass is just right and resonates well after a listen. The title track, “Supreme Being” is a half-time dubstep number with a gypsy twist: a slow, entrancing eastern groove, echoes expanding out into emptiness. This one utilizes a stripped down composition, yet manifests a very full and richly textured sound. Hand percussion enters to backup tight and cold snare hits. A very dark ambience is sculpted, ominous and sparse filled with attacking bass stabs and sub attacks. The overall composition entices both the bodily and cerebral strings of the listener. Hajee’s remix of “Supreme Being” introduces more sonic and melodic elements, adding energy by “sharpening the edges” with his interpretation: namely his use of ‘psyched-out’ mallets, bass stabs and percussive space as well as fills and flip-ups. The result is a more layered arrangement which still possesses Gyu’s original (sub) bass movement and groove, yet makes room with Hajee’s expression and can be heard as some points throughout as an accompaniment.
