X and The Flowers of Evil Tour LA 2K10 (Show review)

Broken Note

(November 13, 2010) AN awesome night and a mind-altering showcase of electronic destruction; So Simple and Darkmatter Soundsystem presented X and the Flowers of Evil Tour LA 2K10; one of the best shows I’ve been to in a while. One, getting the secret location for the show and finding out that it was in Los Angeles I knew instantly that this was going to be what I call a “hardcore L.A. gig.” What is a hardcore L.A. gig, you ask? (1) It’s usually in an abandoned building or industrial complex in a desolate area; (2) It’s usually BYOB with a unique crowd; (3) The toilets usually stop working after the first hour of the gig. No Hollywood glitz bullshit, down and dirty is what it’s all about.

So we make our way to the gig and sure enough it’s in some warehouse in L.A. and after a few pre-gig toasts Pietrobot, Chris, and Xxon Mill (me) proceed into the club/show. We head through a dead and rather vacant hallway leading us to a table with the entrance fee people, and then into the show we go. The first thing you feel at a true underground gig is the energy, building energy, in the air, and a sense of controlled anarchy. The beats are loud and raw with no apologies to anyone who can’t take it. It is dark and basically it is one massive warehouse with an accessible side (chill-out) area that had ramps and jumps that skaters enjoyed all night (off and on) –I even witnessed a hula-hooping girl over there for a while. The back area was where the DJ tables were set up enhanced with large red stop lights near them backed up by great lighting visuals (courtesy of V1de0 D1ab3t3s.

The show had already started (we entered just after 11:30pm) and we were able to see headliner Broken Note, WXM, Strangeloop and Xanopticon perform live and direct. All simply mind blowing, the aforementioned energy in the air, fever pitched and crackling all sounded defiantly astounding. Broken Note dropped heavy distortion mixed with wobble bass dub that was off the charts. You could almost reach out and touch the thundering pulse ricocheting throughout the room and bouncing off of everyone. This was a gig that was going off. Broken Note‘s set was a roaring freight-train of power that washed over everything while Xanopticon came out and blew out more suburban brain cells and created new underground frequencies for all to digest. Food Not Bombs was there to provide the hungry subterranean audio soldiers with vegan grub.

Having been to many shows over the years (similar to this event), they are always a good time with X & The Flowers of Evil Tour LA 2K10 being no exception; this show was utter insanity and was easily one of the highlights for 2010.

Damn; hat’s off to the true underground.
